Escape From Grace

- an absurdly hilarious whimsical drama -

written by Haley McGee
directed by Elizabeth Helmers
dramaturgy by Jordan Pettle and Sheldon Rosen

Escape from Grace is at once a hilarious and poignant theatrical experience, a celebration of the moments of comedy that put grief into perspective. The play follows the struggles of the McCarthy family as they “help” their father, Winston (Paul Rainville), deal with the death of his youngest child. Every other character has found something to believe in to help them cope. Whether it is golf, academia, yogic energy, or drugs, the family is slowly finding footholds in normal life. Gathering for Winston’s birthday, they use these footholds in a frantic attempt to cajole him into reclaiming his life. Do they succeed?--not without more drastic acts of atonement and glimpses of surprising hope.

A product of Ryerson University’s prestigious theatre training program,
Escape from Grace began as a monologue for a class taught by critically acclaimed playwright Sheldon Rosen. The play, after many readings at Ryerson’s student-run Guerilla Theatre, was directed by Jordan Pettle in its first workshop production, where it enjoyed a sold-out run at Ryerson Theatre School’s New Voices Festival.

The Ryerson Theatre School rounds out the cast, which includes instructor Marianne MacIsaac, and recent graduates Marla Brennan, Jesse Griffiths, Carlyn Burchell, Jenn Dzialoszynski, and Evan Williams.
